How Long Does a Spray Tan Take? Appointment vs. Development
Plan about 20–30 minutes for an airbrush tan, plus the formula’s rinse and development windows. Learn what to ask before booking.
Budget about 20–30 minutes for a technician-applied spray tan, then follow your formula’s waiting time before the first rinse. Those are separate parts of the schedule: you leave the salon well before the color finishes developing. As one salon example, Spray Tans by Sarah allows about 20 minutes for the whole process and asks new clients to allow 30 minutes.
An automated booth can be quicker. Sunsational Tans’ VersaSpa FAQ lists approximately 10 minutes including changing, with just 1–3 minutes of spraying. These salon estimates are current as of October 2026; allow extra time for travel or waiting for an available room.
How much time to block out for the appointment
Use the salon’s booked appointment length rather than a claim about how fast the equipment sprays. Your visit needs room for choosing the service and shade, changing, application, drying and getting dressed—not just the mist itself.
For a first visit, ask whether the booking includes the consultation and instructions. A useful question is: “How long will I be there from arrival to being ready to leave?” If you are booking a mobile tan, also ask whether setup and packing away are included in the quoted time.
Arrive prepared rather than counting on doing your skin preparation in the appointment slot. Our spray-tan preparation checklist covers that earlier part of the timeline.
How long until you can rinse—and see the final color?
There are two more times to confirm before you book:
| Stage | Timing to plan around |
|---|---|
| First rinse with a traditional formula | Norvell’s general guidance is 6–8 hours, but your specific formula’s directions take priority. |
| First rinse with a rapid formula | For Norvell Venetian Rapid, rinse at 1 hour for light, 2 hours for medium or 3 hours for the darkest color. These times are product-specific. |
| Fully developed color | Norvell lists 18–24 hours for Venetian Rapid, despite its earlier rinse window. |

“Rapid” means an earlier rinse, not necessarily finished color within an hour. Venetian Rapid also contains cosmetic bronzer that provides immediate color and rinses away; that initial appearance is not the final developed shade.
For example, if your Venetian Rapid application finishes at 5 p.m. and your technician specifies the two-hour medium rinse, plan to rinse at 7 p.m.—but allow until the following day to judge the result. Ask whether that first wash should be a water-only rinse and when a normal shower is allowed. Our formula-by-formula shower guide explains the distinction.
Can you fit it into a lunch break?
The appointment may fit; the aftercare still needs to fit the rest of your day. Bring loose clothing to change into, as Spray Tans by Sarah recommends, and avoid workouts or other activities that cause sweating before the first rinse, consistent with byMakai’s aftercare guidance.
Before confirming, get three answers: the full visit length, your exact rinse time and when your chosen formula reaches full color. For an event, schedule around that last answer—not just the time you leave the salon.
