Portable Spray Tan Machine: Compare What You Carry and Hold
Compare handheld and hose-based portable spray tan machines by weight, power, handling and the full kit you need for mobile appointments.
Choose a portable spray tan machine by separating what you carry between appointments from what you hold while spraying. An all-in-one handheld unit removes the separate turbine and hose from your packing list. A hose-based system has more pieces to transport, but the turbine stays out of your hand during application.
Neither arrangement is automatically better. Start with your workspace, appointment schedule and preferred handling—not the word “portable” on the box.
Three portable options, with different trade-offs
These are manufacturer-listed equipment specifications, checked October 26, 2026. The listings do not consistently define which components are included in each weight, so use them as a starting point—not as measurements of filled applicators or packed mobile kits.
| Machine | Listed weight | Layout | Published warranty |
|---|---|---|---|
| MineTan Bronze Babe Professional | 800 g, approximately 1.8 lb | Applicator and mini turbine in one handheld unit; 9.8-foot power cord | One year, parts only |
| Norvell Oasis | 3 lb | Hose-free handheld system | Six months |
| Norvell M1000 | 6.5 lb | Separate HVLP turbine and spray gun; 10-foot quick-release hose | One year |
For the lowest listed weight: the Bronze Babe Professional measures approximately 3.5 inches wide, 5.9 inches long and 9.8 inches high. Its 125 mL cup and combined gun/turbine layout make it worth considering when reducing equipment bulk is the priority. These specifications apply to the Professional kit, not every Bronze Babe listing. MineTan specifications
For a hose-free Norvell setup: the Oasis removes hose handling, but Norvell requires it to remain upright and level while spraying, without shaking it. The recommended maximum fill is 2.5 oz, regardless of the cup’s larger capacity. Consider whether you can maintain that position comfortably throughout an application. Oasis handling directions
For a separate gun and turbine: the M1000 adds a hose to setup and packing, while keeping the turbine out of your spraying hand. Norvell also requires this gun to stay vertical; change the spray direction by rotating the air cap rather than tilting the gun. Its listed 6.5 lb system weight should not be mistaken for the gun’s handheld weight. M1000 directions and specifications

Check power and workload before buying
Hose-free does not mean cordless. The Bronze Babe Professional has a power cord, and its manual specifies indoor use only—not outdoor or wet-surface use. It also requires the device’s regional voltage to match the electricity supply and prohibits voltage-converting devices. A travel plug adapter is not a substitute for that check. Before ordering, ask the supplier:
- What voltage and plug does this exact unit use?
- What continuous operating time and cooling breaks does the manufacturer specify?
- Is it suitable for the number of consecutive clients you intend to spray?
- Are replacement cups, pickup tubes, filters and seals available locally?
- Does the warranty cover parts only, and who handles repairs?
Do not infer a back-to-back appointment capacity from “professional,” motor speed or wattage. Get model-specific operating limits before planning a group booking around one machine.
Weigh the whole mobile kit
For mobile work, make a packing list before comparing machine weights:
- Machine, gun, cups, hose and power cable, as applicable
- Solution bottles in a separate leak-resistant container
- Tent or other suitable overspray containment, plus floor protection
- Any extraction equipment and its filters
- Client protection supplies, towels and cleaning materials
- Carry cases and model-specific spare parts
Measure the packed cases and weigh the complete load. A small handheld machine may save space, but it does not eliminate the workspace equipment. Our spray tan equipment checklist covers what belongs beyond the starter kit.
Do not treat a tent or an overspray fan as proof that inhalation is controlled. In the US, FDA restricts DHA to external application, excluding the eye area, lips and mucous membranes, and advises protection against inhalation or ingestion during spray tanning. FDA guidance If you cannot prevent those exposures, choose a non-mist self-tanning lotion or cream instead, following its directions and avoiding those areas.
Include cleanup in the travel schedule
Portability also means being able to clean and pack the equipment correctly at the appointment location.
MineTan directs users to clean the Bronze Babe Professional after each use, flush its gun with warm water, avoid alcohol and acetone, and never submerge the gun. Let the unit cool before storage and fold the power cord rather than wrapping it around the machine. Cleaning and storage instructions
Norvell’s M1000/Z3000 maintenance guide calls for end-of-day gun cleaning, along with weekly and monthly maintenance. Use the directions for your exact model rather than transferring another gun’s soaking or disassembly procedure. Norvell maintenance guide
Before buying, map one complete visit: carry in, set up, spray, clean, cool and pack. Choose the machine that fits that routine—not just the lightest item in the bag.
